Best Ramen in Tokyo Japan or Possibly the Best in the World? - vlog #042 part 1
Hey everyone today is my last full day in Japan and we're starting off on a trip in order to go to the best ramen location in Tokyo Japan, possibly the best ramen in Japan or possibly the world! Menya Itto 麺屋一燈 has frequently been the highest rated ramen shop on Tabelog and was #1 when I went there in 2017. I just checked on Tabelog and it still sits at #1 at a score of 4.08/5 the #2 ranked ramen shop is close by with a score of 4.06. I've eaten at numerous ramen shops during my stay here including Nakiryu and Tsuta which were the first ramen shops to win Michelin stars. I believe Menya Itto does not have a Michelin star.
Lucky I wrote down a guide on how to order ramen and what to expect here. This place is a bit out of the way and is on the outer edge of Tokyo. I recommend you coming to Menya Itto on a weekday for lunch seeing how I assume most people work and the line would be shorter. When you get here you'll want to line up and eventually you'll be let in to order your meal at the vending machine. Remember to bring cash though, they do not accept credit cards! They are most famous for their No.1 Rich Seafood Chicken Tsukemen so I would probably get that if you visit there! If you never had tsukemen before, it is basically like ramen, but the broth is in a seperate bowl and is much thicker and the flavors are more rich and concentrated. Once you have placed your order, you'll hand your ticket to the staff near the machine and go back to your position in line.
Once it's your turn to come in they will seat you and you get to watch the masters at work. I wanted to vlog more here, but the restaurant was fairly quiet and the only sounds you could hear is the radio, the chef's cooking, and people eating. I was so impressed by the size of the bowl of the tsukemen and how much food you get! The noodles are very elastic and bouncy similar to udon and the broth was so rich and flavorful. They also give you a abundance of meat like chicken meatballs and pieces of pork belly in the broth. You also get 3 pieces of meat which was the sous vide chicken and pork, and a piece of simmered pork chashu. These 3 pieces of meat are cut pretty thick and delicious. The marinated egg was cooked perfectly for me.
Like holy smokes this bowl was amazing! I've seen so many youtube videos recommending ramen places like Ippudo, Ichiran, Tsuta, Nakiryu and boy this place blows all of em out of the water. Menya Itto was probably my number 1 meal in Japan along with Sushi Dai during this trip! The price that you pay for the food and quality that you get is unmatched. If you never had ramen before though, I recommend you going to all those other places that I mentioned in that order before heading to Menya Itto though so you have something to compare it to! They also have a location in Bangkok however I don't know if the quality will be the same or if the menu is slightly different.
Afterwards I head back and head to Supermarket Ozeki to buy some whisky. I'm a whisky fan and at the time Nikka From the Barrel was recommended to me and it was only available in Japan at the moment. It's now available in the U.S. If you're not a drinker thats fine, Ozeki supermarket is a nice place to stop at to buy some produce, sushi, and toiletries.
Stay tuned for part 2!
