Patrice Rushen ~ Haven't You Heard 1979 Disco Purrfection Version

Patrice was a child prodigy and in 1972 won a prize at the Monterey Jazz Festival. In 1979, she began to woo the r&b and dance crowd by releasing the excellent "Pizzazz" with its centerpiece hit, "Haven't You Heard", a song that is considered to be influential in the transition from disco to dance. Hell, even today this song is sampled!

Patrice Louise Rushen was born September 30, 1954, the older of two daughters born to Allen and Ruth Rushen. Patrice began piano lessons at the age of three and by the age of six was giving classical recitals.

As a teen she attended Lock High School and earned her degree in music from the University of Southern California. After her triumph at The Monterey Jazz Festival, she was signed to Prestige Records at the age of 17. After three albums with Prestige, she signed with Elektra Records in 1978. Her second album "Pizzazz" was issued in 1979 and spawned the club hit "Haven't You Heard" which went to #5 on the disco chart, peaked at #42 for two weeks on the Hot100 and #7 on the R&B survey.

It was a welcome change from the disco at the time with its jazz funk arrangement that favored the 4/4 beat that only added to it's power.
