Betty Wright ~ What Are You Going To Do With It 1981 Disco Purrfection Version
Betty Wright had big hits with "Clean Up Woman" and then scored big with a disco song written by KC and Richard Finch especially for her, "Where Is The Love" a successful move for her as it peaked at #2 disco for two weeks in 1975.
A few years later, Peter Brown let the news show 60 Minutes into the studio while he and Betty were in the process of recording "Dance With Me" and we saw how her vocals were added to the final mix. When "Dance With Me" was issued in March of 1978 it entered the Hot100 at #95, and it eventually peaked at #8 on that chart and #4 disco.
It became her last Top40 hit but she continued to release songs with TK Records up to 1979 but then signed with Columbia releasing one single and then she was moved to the Epic label. A few singles later, Stevie Wonder was brought in to help her flagging career and presented her with the raucously audacious "What Are You Going To Do With It" for her eponymously titled 1981 debut LP.
During this brief resurgence she also provided background vocals for Richard "Dimples" Field's "She's Got The Papers On Me" an R&B hit also during 1981.
Betty also holds the world record for being the first black woman artist to get a gold album on her own label for 1987's "Mother Wit" a comeback LP that included "No Pain, No Gain" and "After The Pain" which brought her back to the Top20 R&B chart.
She remained relevant in the new millennium and in 2001 "The Very Best of Betty Wright" and her first studio album in years "Fit For A King". In 2006 Sean Combs brought her on as a vocal coach for his new group discovery Danity Kane and she went on to mentor a number of new singers and handled vocal production duties for Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez and Joss Stone. She was nominated for a 2005 Grammy Award for her production on the Joss Stone LP "Mind, Body & Soul" with Steven Greenberg (Funkytown, 1980) and Michael Mangini but did not win.
During her life she married three times and birthed five children and suffered through the shooting death of her song Patrick Parker Jr who died on Christmas Day 2005.
She also knew when she was being sampled and The Lox used the live version of "Tonight Is The Night" and "Pure Love" which she approved for his song "Good Love". Betty filed the papers agains Color Me Badd for using a sample of "Tonight Is The Night" without her permission, sued and won a 35% claim on all royalties from "I Wanna Sex You Up".
Lil Wayne invited her to duet on his single "Playing With Fire" in 2008.
We lost her to cancer on May 10, 2020 at her home in Miami, Florida at the age of 66.
