Peter Frampton ~ Show Me The Way (Live) 1976 Classic Rock Purrfection Version

In Detroit, there used to be a department store named EJ Korvette's or just Korvettes. It was a contemporary of KMart but a step up. Ma used to take us shopping for clothes there and we kids used to tear up the music section to see what was going on. One Saturday, I ran upstairs to the music section where they were having a Pie Eating Contest so apropos for a group called Humble Pie. There were three contestants, all male who had to eat the whole pie without using their hands. It was exciting to help cheer on the contestants while the album played in the background. The short muscle bound guy with a mustache and Bob Seger hair won a a free album and his picture in the local paper.

Humble Pie was formed in 1969 when Peter and guitarist Steve Marriott decided to form a band. Frampton relates that the early days of Humble Pie were the best as "there was energy unlimited. We were all at the age where we were just going for it. It was the perfect band for me to develop and define the Frampton style of guitar playing."

Peter was born April 22, 1950 in Beckingham, Kent UK and attended technical school where his dad was a teacher and the head of the Art Department. At the age of 7 he discovered his uncles banjolele and began to learn how to play it. By the age of 8 he was already on his way learning classical music.

He joined his first band at the age of 12 and kept at it and joined The Herd as guitarist lead singer earning several minor hits in the UK. He was 18 when Humble Pie was formed in 1969. He soon learned how to use the "talk box" that utilized a plastic tube attached to a unit that pushed the guitar sound through the tube and into his mouth that he could mouth the words which gave him the effect of flanging the guitar, his trademark effect.

After four years of Humble Pie, he struck out on his own after five albums with that band in 1971. He had a few minor releases but did not get the recognition he deserved until he gathered up his best studio tracks to perform live for his "Frampton Comes Alive" album. It was so popular that it beat out Fleetwood Mac's White Fleetwood Mac album to become the best selling album of 1976. It turned him into a rock superstar, but he was unable to maintain the momentum.

Pressured in to completing more recordings to cash in on his popularity resulted in 1977's "I'm In You" a #2 pop hit. Frampton felt the pressure to produce and he did but after that, his chart fortunes declined. His performance in the "Sgt Pepper's" movie along with the Bee Gees could not save them from the critics who savagely attacked it. An industry joke was that it was shipped gold and returned platinum. Then a near fatal car accident derailed his career.

His next three albums tanked and he considered leaving A&M but he kept on until 1986 when "Lying" brought him back to the charts. He also collaborated with David Bowie. He kept his public profile active by recording more music and touring with groups like Styx and in 2006 released the instrumental LP "Fingerprints" that earned him respect. He took his retirement in 2019, but came back to perform for the "Buddy Holly's 85th Birthday Celebration in Lubbock, Texas.
