Sister Sledge ~ All American Girls 1981 Disco Purrfection Version
This is my favorite Sister Sledge song, it's an anthem for all women who remember the girl within. So much positivity, it's uplifting and you can dance to it! It was their first release after they parted ways with Chic that had them bring in Narada Michael Walden to produce. The new aggressive stance and sound of Sister Sledge was not far from their most popular recordings to date. The new drum acoustics gave it an energy that ramped up when that jingly reverberating guitar lick comes in. The group now were co-producers on the album and sister Joni was a co writer for the most popular song of the album "All American Girls".
Narada was having some success on his own in the clubs with "I Shoulda Loved You" and "Tonight I'm Alright" lighting up the disco chart with his clean and energetically funky dance tunes in 1979. He also worked his magic on Stacy Lattisaw's "Jump To The Beat/Dynamite" was also a #1 disco success.
It was not a far stretch for him to bring the Sisters into the 80's using more synthesizers and it was a comfortable fit. "All American Girls" peaked at #6 on the disco chart with "He's Just A Runaway" as the double A side, the two best dance tracks on that album with the latter being noted as a tribute to Bob Marley. It was also notable for its rapid rock beat, now I'm gonna get busy on remixing that one.
This song bridged an important part of my life, it was in the clubs when I left Quebec, and when I got to Detroit it was blasting out of the clubs there. When disco "died" in the fall of 1979, there was such an abrupt change in attitude. I could feel something in the air like man, the party's over. "All American Girls" kept the disco spirit alive.
It hot again with a 2001 remix added an excellent and complimentary drum and bass track that takes it to the heavens. I found this incredible dance version that was mainly instrumental but the chorus was intact. I'm gonna get on that remix, I found it on a white
