Steely Dan ~ Hey Nineteen 1980 Jazz Funk Purrfection Version

Happy Monday! I thought this would be a good way to get you back in a good groove for the upcoming week.

"Hey Nineteen" tells the story of an older man who is wooing a young adult female of nineteen and finds out that the only thing they have in common is sex. He is surprised to find she does not know who Aretha Franklin is and finds it is easier to deal with by imbibing shots of Cuervo Gold and smoking pot to help him blur their differences. There is no way that this was the basis for a solid, long lasting relationship.

"Gaucho" was their 8th studio album and was issued in 1980. They were known for a rotating membership of studio musicians so you might not now that only one person played on all eight of their releases to this point and that was percussionist Victor Feldman. He passed away in May of 1987 at the age of 53 was a British Jazz musician who played with the Glenn Miller Orchestra when he was just 13 years old.

The album title "Gaucho" applied to a cowboy of the South American pampas but also the chose the title since it resembled the french word "gauche" which meant socially awkward.

"Hey Nineteen" peaked at #10 on the Hot100, #11 Adult Contemporary and #68 R&B in the US. It spent 19 weeks on the chart equaling the chart performances of "Peg" and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" in a three way tie of their most popular songs.
