Ego Identification and Chronic Pain - Lessons From A BILLIONAIRE

Dealing with chronic pain can be very emotionally and physically challenging and unfortunately, much of the suffering experienced by those with chronic pain comes from identification with the ego.

Looping negative thoughts related to fear, uncertainty, regret, blame, shame, doubt, and anger often amplify the pain and produce a physiological environment that perpetuates behaviors such as hyper-vigilance, avoidance, and immobilization.

For many, making a small shift out of identification with these negative thoughts could alleviate the vast majority of suffering, however this shift, especially if you don't even know that it is accessible to you, is often difficult for people to make.

The issue here is that many of us go through life identifying with our thoughts, whether they are negative or positive.

When I asked my billionaire client about his high-stakes job and he told me that he has to make sure not to get too caught up in the ups or the downs, it made logical sense to me but had no deeper meaning.

Years later, I realize what a simple, yet profound insight this is.

For me personally, I had a lot go my way throughout my early life and I attributed a lot of my success to actions I had taken.

When I was identified with being the same as the successes in my life, it felt pretty good and I used this identity to push myself to achieve more.

However, what I didn't realize, like many people, is that this identification with the outcomes in my life would come back to bite me in the butt when I faced challenges.

When I began experiencing physical symptoms and emotional disturbance, I felt one with all the emotions and negative thoughts I mentioned earlier.

I was angry, blamed myself and others, felt fearful of the future, and resented the past.

I felt responsible for causing my issues and desperately wanted to fix them.

This cycle of identification even led me to pursue a career as a physical therapist, with my intention being to fix myself by acquiring more knowledge.

This again was the ego talking, telling me that I could control the outcomes in my life by learning more and trying harder.

The reality was that this mindset was what was keeping me stuck.

When it comes down to it, many factors in life are beyond our control and whether or not we achieve a certain outcome is many times out of our hands.

What does remain constant is whether or not we are taking action to control what we can.

The point that most people miss here is that these actions include the way we identify with our thoughts.

Every second you have a choice as to whether you want to identify with the thoughts in your head.

If you make the choice to let go and step back into a state of awareness from which you can recognize thoughts as being present but not identical to you, you will begin on a road filled with self-acceptance, equanimity, and far less suffering.
