Greetings. I'm Tim of Govberg and welcome to the world of IWC. Today we're discussing the IWC Big Pilot's watch edition Le Petit Prince. You can see this 46mm commemorative Big Pilot's watch in the entire 2016 IWC Pilot's watch line on our website GovbergWatches.com. Continuing the long standing association between IWC and the Antoine De Saint Exupery Foundation. The Big Pilot's watch edition Le Petit Prince combines the classical aesthetic of the instrument inspired Big Pilot's watch, an element from IWC's heritage and a modern icon, with the memory of Antoine De Saint Exupery's most iconic literary work, Le Petit Prince, The Little Prince.

The image of the prince can be seen engraved on the back, featuring his sword and the striking pose as the ruler of asteroid B6112. Screwed in, it endows the watch with six ATM water resistance. On the dial, all of the 2016 reference 5,009 refinements are present in force. Starting with the Arabic numeral nine, returned to it's station at 9'oclock for the first time since the original 2002 reference 5001 and the dropped triangular index at 12'oclock. Of course ever Big Pilot's watch, 46mm in stainless steel, draws it's historic inspiration from IWC's pioneering 1940s instrument style Pilot's watch with pocket watch movement.

In the modern era, IWC has launched the Big Pilot's watch as a combination of historical homage and modern luxury refinement. Best communicated by the midnight blue sunburst pattern of this dial. The watch features a number of refinements that it's historical antecedence could never have imagine, including full radial power reserve at 3'oclock and a convenient jump date indicator discreetly positioned for a balanced poise at 6'oclock.

The watch also features immense broad sword style hands at center. Fully lumed, it's as legible in low and no light conditions as it is in broad daylight. Outward of the case which features both polished highlights and broad satin finish, the watch includes a Santoni strap made expressly for IWC by Italian leather specialist Santoni. In supple calf skin, it features the signal orange that is the signature of the Italian mason underneath and a dark brown calfskin on the top with a contrasting vintage inspired off white stitch and the signature IWC Big Pilot's watch strap bolts.

Outward of the strap, a steel IWC deploying clasp, single fold with alternately polished and satin finished elements, features the engraved IWC marquee and keeps the watch secure on the wrist when being donned or removed. The case of the watch is secured against explosive decompression in a cockpit, such that the crystal, the seals, and the case back will remain secure should this emergency condition set itself in motion. Moreover, with a soft iron inner cage, the watch also features robust resistance to magnetic fields, such as can be generated by high powered office equipment, loud speakers, refrigerator magnets, or high powered home entertainment systems.

The watch features an IWC manufacturer caliber 51111 with a seven day power reserve, or 168 hours. It's automatic winding with IWC's historic bidirectional pawl based Pellaton winding system. It also features all of the refinements one would expect of a contemporary time piece. When you pull the crown to extremity, it does hack the seconds, such that you can synchronize the watch precisely with stop seconds to a known accurate reference time, and a quick set adjustment for the date at 6'oclock, such that the watch can be rapidly corrected should it encounter an irregular length month or run down.
