Greetings and welcome to the world of IWC. Today we're discussing the IWC Big Pilot's Watch Top Gun. For 2016, the Big Pilot's Watch Top Gun receives a trimmer, taughter and more aesthetically versatile case in 46mm ceramic rather than it's predecessor's 48mm. The watch also receives a number of dial refinements including the return of the much loved dropped triangular index at 12:00 and the Arabic numeral 9 at the 9:00 station on the dial. The watch also includes a counter sunk 7 day power reserve and a discreet stepped jump date window at 6:00 for easy legibility and practicality.

The aesthetic of the Top Gun series is tactically inspired with subdued black tones and matte finishes. The watch, featuring an engraved case back in tribute to the US Naval Fighter Weapons School today known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instruction Program, is an homage in a more subdued form than it's high gloss predecessor. This one engraved into the case back is a tribute but not visually loud, more subdued, again tactically inspired. The watch features a ceramic case essentially indelible and doused the watch with the same kind of resilience that a sapphire crystal enjoys. Only able to be scratched with ease by diamond, it ensures long wear and durability for it's good looks and oversized instrument inspired timepiece.

Also for 2016, the Big Pilot Top Gun receives an embossed calfskin strap. It has the look of a vintage textile or canvas strap. The embossed pattern is actually atop a calfskin base so the entire strap is leather with the more traditional grain of leather visible on the bottom, supple against the skin and paired with a subdued matte finish stainless steel deployant buckle with faceted surfaces and the IWC marquee engraved.

Internal to the case beneath the screwed in case back and controlled by the crown, of over 10mm in diameter, is an IWC manufacture caliber 51111. Automatic winding with an 168 hour 7 day power reserve, it's the world's largest automatic winding wristwatch movement. It features a Breguet over coil hairspring hand made for resistance to positionally induced timing deviation.

Thanks to the screw down crown and the screwed in case back, it's also protected against 6 ATM (60m) of water pressure and it features a unique explosive decompression protection such that the case back, the seals and the crystal are protected from discharge in the event that an aviation cockpit should rapidly lose pressure. The watch also features IWC's signature Pellaton pall based winding system for efficient and smooth bidirectional winding action on the wrist.
