Image this: You were on track with your diet for over a month now, but now there's an important event that you got invited to and it will involve food.

The event was super fun, but something happened...

You ended up overeating... and now you're feeling a bit guilty about that.

Whenever this would happen to me I would feel horrible, the guilt would be "eating" me from the inside.

How do you overcome this, how do you stop feeling guilty about food?

Here's a 4 step process I found to work really well for dealing with guilt.

Step #1 - Perspective

So you overate? Why does that matter? Even if it was 1000 or 2000 extra calories would you remember it 5 years from now?

Often under that emotion, we feel like the world is ending after that 1 single event.

But if you "zoom out" and look at the big picture, you'll realize that it's insignificant.

Looking at the course of 5, 10 or 15 years of taking care of your health, exercising, sleeping well does it matter?

Not at all. We can often see this with others but we don't see it in ourselves.

A good "trick" to put things in the right perspective is to imagine you're giving one of your friends' advice about the same situation.

What would you tell a friend in the same situation you're in right now?

It would most likely a very objective and rational perspective.

Step #2 - Moving forward

The past is not in your control. You can't change it, you can only move forward.

People often forget about this in the heat of the moment. What's the point of dwelling on the past? Does it help anyone?

Not that much. And it's better to invest energy into a better future.

Step #3 - Be grateful for the lesson

Every situation like this holds a valuable lesson.

And if you look at your past, it's most likely that some of the biggest lessons you've learned in your life came from very stressful events.

Guilt often prevents us from seeing the situation for what it is really doing, and that is making you stronger.

There's really no such thing as failure, only lessons learned.

4 - Understand why you overate to be able to move forward

Why did you end up overeating?

Was your diet too rigid? Have you been dieting for too long or too hard?

There's a reason or at least a trigger for overeating that if you understand the "Why" it will help you move forward.

As Albert Einstein defined insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

One of the ways to not make a mistake twice is to understand why it happened in the first place.

These 4 steps have helped me on my journey a lot. Hope they help you too.
