The game's origins date back thousands of years, when ball games were played all over the world by many different countries. Then, more recently in the Warwickshire town of Rugby in 1823, school boy William Webb Ellis allegedly picked up a football and began running with it, inventing the sport of Rugby Football.
As its popularity began to increase, Rugby Football began to separate from the FA (Football Association) and eventually became a professional game in 1995. With Rules originally written back in 1845, Rugby was separated into two distinct factions, Rugby Union, and Rugby League.
Since then, although the sport has continued to increasde in popularity, it still remains behind Fooball, yet it seems a World Cup on home soil may increase interest in the sport, which for a while, was seen by many as simply a different version of Football. Now let's switch over to ITV and watch the game!
