What Does The Irish Referendum Mean To Us?

What Does The Irish Referendum Mean To Us?-On 22 May 2015, a referendum was held in the Republic of Ireland, to determine whether same sex marriage should be legalised. If the people vote Yes, then Thirty Fourth amendment of the Irish Constitution will come into action, declaring marriage as a ‘union between 2 persons, regardless of gender’

If it passes, this would make the Republic of Ireland the first nation to change its laws regarding same-sex marriage, via a referendum. It would also make same-sex marriage legal in the whole of the British Isles. However the No campaign, represented by Christians and other centre-right politicians, claim that marriage is something sacred that shouldn’t be changed, an argument which also encompasses the idea that children need both a mother and a father.

Yes campaigners call for marriage equality, citing the idea that nobody should decide who should and shouldn’t marry; we should all be treated equally. Whatever the result, it will have long lasting effects all over the world, regarding how we think of same-sex marriage, and whether referendums are a good idea.
