What Does Parliament Actually Do?

There are two Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. One, The House of Lords, is where the Lords sit. They are unelected, and are usually specialists in specific subjects, that the Government sometimes requires advice on. The other, the house commons, is where Members of Parliament sit. They are adjudged to be representative of normal people.

Every time there is general election 650 MPs are elected to the House of Commons by their constituents. In reality, the Prime minister has little power when it comes to making laws, unless he can gain a majority in the House of Commons. This is because, to pass new laws, they have be voted through by the MPs. The House of Lords can stall these laws if they disagree with them, but the final decision regarding whether it becomes an act of Parliament is always up to the MPs. The Queen also has to sign off a new Law, before it can become official. However it is incredibly rare for her to refuse sign one. So there’s the basics.
