What Is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or Motor neuron disease in the UK is a disorder that involves the death of neurons in the brain. Neurons control our basic functions such as breathing and swallowing, as well as more complex movements such as walking and talking. As ALS worsens, it causes these basic functions to become increasingly difficult, to a point where they are impossible to do.

The exact cause of ALS is unknown, although it is sometimes inherited from people’s parents. For patients with ALS, long-term survival is often simply not an option. The average survival from onset to death is three to four years. A number of clinical trials are currently ongoing to try and find a cure for ALS, but it’s impossible to know whether a cure will ever be found.
