Sea Kayaking Shetland August 2022 Day 14: Kayaking Shetland's St Kilda

Sea Kayaking Shetland Series 2022 Day 14: Kayaking "Shetland's St Kilda"
Little & South Havra From Bridgend before driving to Lerwick to catch the overnight ferry back to Aberdeen.
Sadly our final day on Shetland after a magnificent two weeks Sea Kayaking around its many Islands, fantastically sculpted by the incredible forces of nature.
Today, setting off from Bridgend, we paddled South down the narrow South Voe, between East and West Burra past Papil Isle into West Voe, where we portaged West over the tombolo into the beautiful beach of Banna Minn, continuing out into exposed Atlantic conditions down the remaining exposed side of West Burra with fabulous sea conditions created by the good South Westerly swell to Kettla Ness. From Kettla we crossed to South Havra travelling anticlockwise around the island and into the shelter of West Ham for lunch.
We explored the the ruins of the tiny hamlet earning South Havra the title of Shetland's St Kilda as the inhabitants were evacuated in 1923, 7 years earlier than St Kilda. The houses were built perched on top of the cliffs on the tiny peninsula between West Ham and The Harbour bay providing more precious fertile land to live off.
It is said the the islanders children were tethered to prevent them falling over the cliffs.
lunch over, we paddled across to Little Havra making our way clockwise this time, then made our crossing back to the more sheltered water of West Voe and South Voe finally returning to our start point at Bridgend.

A fitting end to a full 14 days of fabulous Sea Kayaking among the mighty Shetland Islands !!
