Gulf of Corryvreckan Aerial Views
The Gulf Of Corryvreckan lies off the West coast of Scotland between the Islands of Scarba to the North, and Jura to the South. It is an area of water half a mile wide and two miles long from East to West with strong tidal flows passing through it.
This drone video was taken near to mid flow on a flooding neap tide (East to West going stream) with very little wind and no swell.
What I'm trying to show is how the overfall turbulence pulses and how the standing waves form, rise up and break without warning. The seabed in the gulf forms a canyon with a depression of around 700 feet. On a flooding tide water enters this canyon traveling West and meets a pinnacle which rises to around 90 feet from the surface the resultant vertical pulses of water produce violent overfalls with eddie currents doubling back on the main flow, resulting in large whirlpools and turbulence forming at or near the surface. The area of confused water continues to head west with the main flood stream or race and travels up to five miles straight offshore known as 'The Great Race'.
CAUTION: This area can be extremely hazardous to navigate and should not be approached without full navigational and local knowledge. With a Westerly swell opposing the West going stream the race produces huge standing waves which break heavily and can close out the entire gulf. Corryvreckan has taken down large ships and carries a Naval warning to Shipping!
