Sea Kayaking Inchkeith Part 2... Further Exploration of the Island's Ruins March 2022
Part 2.
We continue our in depth exploration of the ruins around the Island on foot as well as using the drone for some perspective from the air. We finished off the day with the obligatory bonfire and suitable beverage after watching a spectacular sunset across the Forth.
The following description taken from Part 1:
Inchkeith Island lies in the middle of the Firth of Forth and in the past has always formed the first line of defence from any sea invasion.
Our quest on this Sea Kayaking Adventure was:
Day 1. Drive to Musselburgh and kayak the short 6.5 miles to the uninhabited island of Inchkeith where we would camp for 2 nights. On the way we'd check out the wreck of the "Switha" a Fisheries Protection Vessel that ran aground on the Little Herwit rocks South East of the Island then circumnavigate the island anticlockwise before landing in the old ruined harbour.
Day 2. Spend the full day thoroughly exploring and photographing the island with camera and drone to record the many military ruins, buildings and tunnels built to defend the entire Firth of Forth from any invasion from the sea. Some of the gun emplacements housed huge 6 and 9inch guns capable of taking out any enemy vessel that dared approach the Forth.
Day 3. Pack up the boats and kayak back to our start point then drive home.
Inchkeith has a very varied history of intermittent habitation dating back more than 1800 years. Its military defences date back to the 16th century.
Inchkeith, from the Scottish Gaelic meaning, "Innis' (Island) and "Cheith" (War). Inchkeith hides a very mysterious storied and lengthy history of plague, disease, quarantine and a slow lingering death for many people who were forcefully shipped out there.
I would urge people to read the fascinating facts and history about the island and its torrid history!
Thanks for Watching!
