Upgrading a Woodworking Workbench | DIY Easy Drawers
I outfitted my bare-bones workbench with these cheap and easy shelves made entirely from scrap wood.
My neighbor recently tried to throw away an Ikea desk and some shelves, so I went dumpster diving and converted the loot into a set of drawers to upgrade my workbench. The total cost of this project was zero dollars, as it is completely made from scraps.
I first built this Basic Mobile Workbench (BMW) as part of Steve Ramsey's "The Weekend Woodworker" course, which I can't recommend highly enough! Here's the link if you are interested: https://theweekendwoodworker.com/
The drawer design is simple, with rabbet and dado joints held together with glue and brad nails. The drawer bottom is wider than the drawer itself, and the overhang fits into dados in side walls that act as the sliding mechanism. The drawers pull in and out easily, even without adding any wax to the contacting surfaces.
The drawer pulls are made from some scrap walnut (extra fancy!), and the shape of the pulls was inspired from Jeremy Schmidt's workbench drawers. I'm glad I made a few extra because I'm going to start putting these on everything that moves in my shop! Here is a link to Jeremy's YouTube channel, he puts out some really great content: https://www.youtube.com/jerswoodshop
An added benefit to installing these drawers comes from the fact that the Ikea particle board is super dense. This workbench is now officially heavy as all hell, which (in my opinion) is a great thing. I can't wait to fill up these drawers with hardware and tools!
