Building a Shaker Inspired Solid Walnut Bed - Part 1 | The Legs
My wife and I recently bought a new queen size mattress so I decided to build a bed frame for it. I designed it myself in Sketchup, and built it out of about 60 board feet of solid walnut. The entire build took about 40 hours.
Some features of the bed are tapered legs, hidden knockdown hardware for the side rails, and special joinery in the headboard to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction of the wood. Besides a few screws in the rail hardware, the bed is held together entirely with glue, primarily with mortise and tenon joints.
In this video, which is the first part of a multi-video series about the construction of this bed, I walk through the milling and construction of the four legs, including the tapers and mortising. I explain what techniques I found to be successful, and also what mistakes I made, so you can avoid making them yourself in your own woodworking projects.
