Gerry Rafferty ~ Baker Street 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

Gerry Rafferty had an ear and a voice for the highly engaging rock and pop music he had a hand in creating, starting with Stealer's Wheel. Did you know he had already quit that band by the time "Stuck In The Middle With You" was a #6 pop hit in 1973? He rejoined Joe Egan, did two more albums and then disbanded. In the meantime Gerry kept writing, while his legal problems with his ex manager prevented him from recording. In 1978 he decided that he had enough good songs for an album and went into the studio. "Baker Street" almost did not have the career making saxophone solo that helped catapult the single to #2 status, caught in the ombre of Andy Gibb's then seven week reign at #1 "Shadow Dancing". Originally, Rafferty was going to with a guitar and piano solo. Realizing that he needed more, he approached saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft who helped turn the song into chart gold. I felt that the drums were way undermixed and have brought them out from the background, one beat at a time. I changed none of the original arrangement, it totally works the way it is. Disco? Nah, disco version, yes. I guess this would be my tribute to DJ Jim Burgess, who did an amazing job on Nicolette Larson's 1979 special 12" disco release of "Lotta Love" and a score of other artists. Jim passed away on January 18, 1993 of an AIDS-related opportunistic infection at the age of 40. You can read more about him here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Burgess_(producer)
