Day 10: Vementry Circumnavigation Clockwise around the Island
A great day's kayaking around Vementry with moderate winds F4 - F5 at times, so the plan was to complete the circumnavigation with best use of the wind providing loads of fun on the downwind sections where we were able to pick up some good surfing runs from time to time. A pleasant stop for lunch and an interesting explore of Shetland's wartime history, a First World War Coastal Defence Battery with its remarkably intact twin 6inch guns and observation post perched high on Swarbacks Head on the North of the Island. The guns protected the deep water channel and deep anchorage of Swarbacks Minn, which was used a forward operating anchorage for Navy Cruiser Squadrons.
A great day for the group with interesting conditions on the exposed West side and a bright day with stunning views.
