Donald Trump will seek ‘revenge’ against Mitch McConnell and establishment Republicans

Donald Trump’s “revenge” against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his fellow establishment Republicans who have abandoned the former president, will be served come re-election time.

The Senate impeachment trial is set to begin in three weeks once President Joe Biden’s cabinet picks are confirmed.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has a decisive voice in the vote as the most senior Congressional Republican, but he has not yet come out in support of Mr Trump.

Mr McConnell has privately indicated the former president no longer carries his support, while other Senate Republicans are reported to be flirting with turning on Mr Trump.

Sky News Washington Correspondent Annelise Nielsen said Mr McConnell could be “really putting the weight of his presence behind Donald Trump,” but his conspicuous absence says a lot.

“What we’ve seen Mitch McConnell do is just not say much at all, and that’s really quite a strong signal in and of itself,” she said.

Paul Murray said the former president’s “revenge will come” in the primary processes in the coming years.

“If a certain part of Trump voters don’t turn up, then Republicans can’t win anywhere.”
