Rusty old Excelsior nut grinder - Restoration

In today's episode I will renovate an old nut grinder. The grinder was pretty bad. The grinder had only part of the handle and the whole top hopper was missing.

Carrot Cake Recipe:
4 eggs, 1 and a quarter cup of oil (even olive), 2 cups of brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract (or maple syrup), 2 cups half-flour, 2 straight spoons of baking soda, 2 straight spoons of baking powder salt, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 3 cups grated coarse carrots (8-10pcs), 1 cup walnuts.

Some of the history of Porkert grinders:

Josef Porkert (February 2, 1828 Abertamy, Austria-Hungary - April 27, 1895 Skuhrov nad Bělou in the Eagle Mountains) was a Czech industrialist and founder of the company of the same name.
He studied at the Upper Academy in Příbram and in 1863 he became director of Rosenhütte in Skuhrov nad Bělou, the iron works of Count Hans Kolowrat founded in 1817. When the iron production was suspended in 1879, he rented the Josef Porkert plant in 1881 and converted it into foundry. He made stoves, pulleys and piano frames here. The plant produced cast-iron frames for the Antonín Petrof company in Hradec Králové and supplied other renowned piano manufacturers Bösendorfer, Hoffman-Czarny, Baumann, Ehrbar and others.

After Josef Porkert's death in 1895, his sons Wilhelm and Edward took over the company. They expanded the production to include kitchen machines, especially meat grinders and other hand grinders, which in the next decades were the focus of the company's production. In 1911 the annual production of "Porkert et al." Reached 100,000, and in 1929 already 400,000 kitchen machines. Three quarters of production went abroad. The main customers were companies in Poland, England and overseas. In the 1940s, electrical appliances and food processors were added.

In 1948 the company was nationalized and the bulk of the product range was moved to other plants. Since then, the plant in Skuhrov has produced only classic hand grinders. The 1992 restitution to the heirs of the Porkert family was not successful. In 2007, the company went into insolvency administration. He then transferred to the successor of Karavel Properties, who took over the factory in 2008. In 2010, traditional production was stopped.

Some kitchen machines manufactured by Porkert are exhibited in the Porkert machines exhibition in the Mlejn Museum in Ostrava, for which I have also renovated several grinders. (source wikipedia)

Action Index:
00:01 Introducing the Excelsior
00:34 Dismantling the grinder
01:45 Preparing for leaching
02:10 Sodium hydroxide application (take care when working with caustic. This is corrosive)
02:40 After 24 hours of leaching, rinse with water.
03:43 We'll make a new handle between the grinder. I used an old nail as a pin.
04:24 The wooden part is made of linden wood. Impregnated with alcohol stain, light oak shade. In the final coat of shellac.
09:44 It is necessary to finish the missing bearing of the crank pin.
12:00 I cleaned all parts with a steel brush.
14:15 Use of hydrochloric acid to lighten the faded sheet. (watch out for work)
14:47 For neutralization of hydrochloric acid we use - base. In our case, sodium hydroxide.
16:10 Sheets treated in this way will be easier to polish. Used cloth wheel and abrasive paste.
17:00 Production of the metal hopper for the grinder follows. I used an old can for that.
22:25 To unify the color of the tin top I put it in the fire for a moment. Then the procedure is the same as for other sheet metal parts.
22:45 Before spraying with base paint, glue the places where the paint is not.
28:05 Riveting the mill
28:36 I used a golden paint marker for gilding.
29:10 Assembly follows.
30:05 Comparison before and after renovation
30:21 Functionality test :)
