Rare Ornate 1890s Mortise Lock Set Restoration | Random Restoration

Welcome! In today's video I will be restoring this rare old 1890s P.& F. Corbin Ceylon double key entry mortise lock. Shocking, right? another door hardware restoration.

I started this restoration by disassembling this lovely old lock. After removing all of the awful rusty and greasy parts I promptly moved onto paint stripping - And there was A LOT of paint to strip. Following that the parts were cleaned and were in dire need of some rust removal. I soaked the non brass parts in rust remover for a few days to loosen up any remaining paint, and to make sure there was no rust left.

While waiting for the rust remover to do its magic I decided to move onto polishing brass. I say that, but the door knobs and escutcheon plates are actually bronze. Anyways, I ended up spending several hours polishing them, with great results! Then I moved on to cutting keys for the lock. This process took a long time, but with the help of a variety of metal files and a lot of sanding later I ended up with some

Then I moved on to the small parts. The brass/bronze parts were polished, then I moved onto bluing steel. More specifically cold bluing. The rest of the small parts got a solid amount of nickel plating. Afterwards I moved onto the ornate bronze face of the mortice lock, which had a bit of damage. I had to figure out how to repair it without compromising the design, but with a few hours of careful sanding later it was looking almost perfect. It was then polished. Then I moved onto painting - Both the mortise lock and the recessed areas around the wrought bronze designs.

I always find a nice rusty restoration project to be the most satisfying to restore, and this one certainly had plenty of rust - and much, much more! It may not have been quite a perfect restoration, as there were some minor imperfections that I couldn't fix, but I knew it would make for an awesome restoration video regardless of the inevitable small flaws!

These entry Ceylon mortise locks are quite hard to find - especially ones that are in good shape. I had to look every day for many months to find this set, but I'm very glad I found it. This is one of those restorations that I've been looking forward to for a long time. If you're familiar with my restoration videos you'll know I have restored mortise locks in the past, but after my first mortise lock restoration and mortise lock repair video I really wanted to focus on one lock vs the ten or so that I did in my previous video. Quality over quantity was certainly my mentality this time 'round.
