This is one of our favorite recipes for making homemade applesauce, its got a rich apple flavor and you sweeten it to taste! We love eating this when its still warm, it's also delicious chilled and keeps in the refrigerator for a 3 - 4 days.
If you’ve ever made apple sauce before, it may have turned out thin and maybe a little runny. Our easy apple sauce recipe makes a thick apple sauce without having to cook it down for hours or drain it.
This applesauce is delicious served warm or chilled, and it’s the perfect time for this with all the delicious apples in season right now, whether you’re going apple picking or getting them from the store.
This apple sauce recipe makes about 4 - 6 cups of fresh applesauce and will keep for several days in the refrigerator, but its so tasty it rarely lasts more than a day.
Easy Applesauce Recipe Ingredients
3 lbs apples, we like using a mix of sweet and tart
2 - 3 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon vanilla
brown sugar to taste - we've used 2 teaspoons
1 pinch of kosher salt (less than 1/8 tsp)
Easy Apple Sauce Recipe Directions or How To Make Applesauce
To make the best tasting applesauce, use 2 or 3 different kinds of apples, some sweet and some tart. The mix I'm using today is Granny Smith, Honeycrisp and Sweetango. You can choose to peel or not peel apples. These are organic and I'm leaving the skins on for the extra flavor and vitamins…. and because it's faster and easier to get this started. I’ll be using an immersion blender to get everything smooth at the end.
Roughly chop the apples, leaving the core and seeds out. I like to trim off any bruises or blemishes too.
Put the chopped apples into a large heavy bottomed pot. Add 2 - 3 tablespoons of water and bring this to a simmer and cover the pot. This is the key to having naturally thick apple sauce. Just 2 - 3 tablespoons will be the perfect amount to create the steam we’ll need to break down the apples quickly. If you do like a looser apple sauce, you can add more after we puree it.
To break the apples down into applesauce, you can use a potato masher, food processor, food mill, and I’m using an immersion blender. Blend the apples until it's the consistency you like. If you like chunky apple sauce, stop soon, for smooth sauce, keep pulsing until its silky smooth. If you like a looser sauce, add a bit of water or cider here until its too your liking.
Because apples vary so much in sweetness and tartness, I season the applesauce at this stage. I’m adding a teaspoon of brown sugar, and just a pinch of kosher salt. Add more sugar to taste, I’ve added another teaspoon of brown sugar. This gives the applesauce a just a hit of caramel flavor, and it’s really incredible served warm. It’s perfect side dish and this special applesauce is always on our holiday table,
Thank you so much for watching and I’ll see you in the next video!
