Our Puff Pastry Christmas Tree is an easy chocolate croissant festive holiday treat that's perfect for Christmas morning breakfast or the holiday brunch table! It's super easy to make with only 3 ingredients - puff pastry, chocolate and an egg yolk. It comes together in less than 10 minutes, bakes in 15 minutes, and then this pull apart puff pastry Christmas tree is ready to enjoy. It looks beautiful and tastes delicious! Dress it up with marshmallows, decorating sugar, powdered sugar or with ribbons of melted chocolate. Serve this puff pastry Christmas tree chocolate twist as an appetizer or as a holiday dessert.

Puff Pastry Christmas Tree Ingredients
1 package of puff pastry sheets
8 - 12 oz chocolate chips (we're using bittersweet dark chocolate)
1 egg yolk
Optional toppings for decorating: marshmallows, sprinkles, decorating sugar, melted chocolate

Puff Pastry Christmas Tree Instructions
Begin by preheating the oven to 400 degrees. Pull the puff pastry sheets out of the package and let them sit side by side for faster, more even defrosting. This may take 15 - 20 minutes.

Now for the filling. Pour about a cup and a half of chocolate chips into a microwave safe container. Microwave on HIGH heat for 30 seconds, remove and stir the chips. They’ll be starting to melt, but still stiff. Continue melting in the microwave, checking at increments of 15 - 30 seconds until the chocolate is nice and melty.

How To Make A Template For The Puff Pastry Christmas Tree
I'm going to show you how to make a puff pastry Christmas tree dessert that will fit perfectly on your serving platter. Choose the serving platter you’ll be using. Take a piece of parchment paper the length of the platter, and fold it in half. Cut a tree shape that fits on the platter.

Next, cut a piece of parchment to the size that will fit on your baking sheet. I’m also using a Silpat underneath to give it some support for when I transfer it to the baking sheet.

When the puff pastry can easily unfold, it’s ready. Lay out one sheet of puff pastry, then unfold the second sheet on top of the first. Place the parchment tree template onto the puff pastry and cut out the tree shape. Save these pastry cuttings for another dessert. Remove the top tree layer and set it aside.

Adding The Chocolate Filling
Spread the melted chocolate all over the bottom layer. I’m putting this on slightly thick, and spreading it almost up to the edges.Place the puff pastry layer on top, lining up the edges. Then, using a sharp knife, begin cutting.

How To Cut The Puff Pastry Christmas Tree
I started with the trunk, cutting two vertical lines for a trunk that’s about an inch wide. Next, begin cutting what will be the branches, about 1 inch thick. The lower branches are slightly thicker than the branches higher on the tree. I did trace two vertical lines on the tree as guidelines for how deep to make the cuts in the trunk of the tree. The puff pastry may stick a little bit, just go over your lines again to ensure your cuts are all the way through.

How To Make The Puff Pastry Christmas Tree Twist
Once the branches are all cut, take the end of the puff pastry and twist it towards the top. The larger lower branches will twist two times, as you go up the tree, the middle branches twist one time and the tip top branches end up doing more like a half twist.

When you’ve finished the first side, repeat on the other side. Once done, brush with egg yolk… and sprinkle with decorating sugar

Transfer it to the baking sheet, and bake in the 400 degree oven for about 12-15 minutes, until golden brown. To serve, I’m drizzling on a bit of the melted dark chocolate and adding a light dusting of powdered sugar. This puff pastry chocolate Christmas tree looks beautiful and tastes just like a delicious chocolate croissant… Your family and friends will love sharing this Christmas desserts.
