Corryvreckan, Scarba & Jura Sea Kayaking Trip Episode 1. Sept 2021
Our 6 Day Sea Kayaking Trip to Scarba through the Gulf of Corryvreckan to Corpach and Shian Bays and down to Ruantallain on West side of Jura and return to Easdale via the Slate Island of Belahua.
Episode 1: Days 1 & 2 Easdale to Shian Bay.
Day 1: Leaving our starting point of Ellenabeich (Easdale) we travel South passing between the old slate island of Belnahua and Fladda with its white walled lighthouse, skirting Ormsa and the associated tidal stream to the northern point of Rubha Fiola through the overfalls and down the East Side to a point it possible to portage to the West to put us in a position where we were able to paddle the West side of Lunga to give us an enjoyable run through Grey Dogs tide race between Lunga and Scarba, from this point we'd paddle down the East of Scarba I planned this to give the ebb stream time to slacken before we'd enter the Gulf of Corryvreckan. Working against the last of its easterly flow and using back eddie on the Southern shore of Scarba we were able to process westwards to land in the shallow bay to adjacent to the site of the whirlpool. My idea was to bivvy in the cave and give us the opportunity to watch the Corryvreckan overfalls and whirlpool through its full tidal flows and cross to Jura in the morning.
sadly the cave was too wet and the surrounding area too rocky for a comfortable night. In light of this
we decided to press on the 4-5 miles to Glengarrisdale Bay on the Northwest of Jura. Through a now sleeping Corryvreckan in the slack water between tides we made our across and then on to Glengarrisdale for the night.
Day 2: Making our way South with a worsening forecast it was a hard slog in the changing wind and swell, we had welcome but chilly lunch at Corpach bay before pressing on to Shian Bay where we'd make this our base camp for a couple of nights to explore the area on foot and a day trip with empty boats, South to Ruantallain on the northwest corner of Jura's Loch Tarbert, for another explore on foot before returning to our tents at Shian where we'd spend the evening with a relaxing few whiskies in front of the campfire as we watched the sun set in the West.
