Breast Cancer Research Review: Lymph Node Surgery and Shoulder Pain

It's imperative that the protocols used for breast cancer rehabilitation are evidence based and that's why completing Breast Cancer Research Reviews is so important.

This study was completed with two groups of breast cancer patients.
1 Group was treated with axillary lymph node dissection and
1 Group was treated with sentinel lymph node biopsy

These two groups of patients were followed over a period of five years with an evaluation completed each year looking at:
shoulder range of motion
shoulder strength
Quality of Life (via questionnaire)
and volume measurement to look at lymphedema

There were differences between the two groups of patients with the axillary lymph node dissection group having a greater number of patients with decreased shoulder internal rotation strength as well as a greater number of patients who required treatment for lymphedema.

Both groups, however, showed a persistence of loss of strength, loss of shoulder range of motion, and decreased quality of life even after five years.

The study concluded that the results will help us understand and plan for the needs of breast cancer patients.

BUT THERE SHOULD BE MORE

The results of this study (and the many others with similar results) should create a priority for cancer centers, hospitals, and post operative care personnel to implement proper range of motion exercise protocols for breast cancer patients immediately after surgery.

This is where everything starts - with mobility. So if we can help survivors move better, then this will allow programming for increased strength and provide the opportunity for better quality of life.

This study only mentions results for shoulder internal and external rotation while there are six shoulder ranges of motion. It is important that a thorough evaluation of patient ranges of motion be completed in order to establish the best exercise protocols for each patient on an individual basis.
