Deer Eating Human Bones

Deer are primarily herbivores, though they have been observed scavenging small mammals or birds and eating other meats on occasion. A deer, however, was recently caught on camera gnawing on human remains. When the deer came across the decomposing body, which had already been feasted on by vultures, it was scavenging. On two occasions, experts observed the animal holding "the bone in its mouth like a cigar" in its mouth.

The body had already been exposed to the elements for 182 days. Experts believe the deer was chewing on dry bone rather than soft tissue. During the winter, deer gnaw on the bones of non-human animals to obtain minerals such as phosphorous, calcium, and sodium that are lacking in their diet. For forensic scientists, the study was not only about analyzing animal behavior, but the deer's marks on the bone are also useful for future reference.
