Elvis Presley - I'm Movin' On - From First Take to the Master

The second day of Elvis’ legendary recording session at American Sound in Memphis was an eventful day but not as productive as it first seems. Having had an energetic but exhausting first day, Elvis’ voice wasn’t in as good form as it should have been. At around two in the morning on 15 January 1969, Elvis and the band began playing around with “I’m Movin’ On”, a Hank Snow classic. With his voice failing he recorded the song using what lyrics he could remember and it is a testament to Elvis that in spite of this it became a superb recording. The night was rounded off with what would become one of Elvis’ all time greatest recordings, “Gentle On My Mind”.
The following morning all became clear, Elvis had a severe bout of laryngitis and this had affected the previous days recordings. Despite pressing on the previous evening, both Elvis and the rest of the crew were already well aware that he would be required to re-record his vocals at a later date.
In the case of “I’m Movin’ On” this vocal overdub took place on 22 January, three days after the backing vocals and brass overdubs had been recorded. However, the process did not end there, far from it in fact, as no party seemed happy with the new re-recorded master.
The decision was taken to create a composite master, essentially made up of different parts from different takes. However, some sort of trial and error seemed to be put into practice as three composite masters were created. The final master comprised of the first fifty three seconds of Elvis’ original 14/15 January vocals with the remainder from the replaced vocals.
In 1980, this was one of the songs chosen by Felton Jarvis to have the backing re-recorded at Young ‘Un Sound in Nashville. However, it was the second of the composites, known as the “alternate composite” that was chosen and released on “Guitar Man” in January 1981.
