Elvis Presley - I Got Lucky - From First Take to the Master

Whilst the opening song of the movie "King of the Whole Wide World" is probably the strongest of the six songs in the movie Kid Galahad, the bounciest and most toe tapping is probably "I Got Lucky". Although the song is about as far from rock 'n' roll as you can get, is still a pleasant listen and fits into that part of the film just nicely, and is far more infectious to watch and listen to rather than just listen to. For the purposes of the movie, instead of asking Elvis to record a take with the chorus repeated, the decision was taken to splice a repeat of the chorus onto the song before the ending and this version can only be heard on the movie soundtrack. Surprisingly, even the recent FTD release does not contain the "movie edit" and so a bit of editing was needed to replicate the audio on the original movie soundtrack.
After six takes, most in the studio thought that they had achieved the master but at some point almost immediately after, the decision was taken to try again. Whereas the first version had been given the designation M5, this new attempt was designated MX5 differentiating the two versions. The master was finally achieved in just two takes but was edited down to just under two minutes before it’s release on the resultant E.P.
Whilst watching the video it is difficult not to chuckle as Joan Blackman constantly struggles with her left dress shoulder strap, and it seems that Elvis and Joan sit down of their own accord in order to afford her no embarrassment and it seems that her smile and laugh at the song's conclusion is genuine in the fun that they had filming this scene!!

As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
