This song was composed by Norwegian pianist Rolf Lovland, a member of the piano/violin duo Secret Garden. It was originally an instrumental piece called "Silent Story," but Løvland asked the Irish novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham to add lyrics after reading Graham's novel The Whitest Flower.

Secret Garden, a Eurovision Song Contest winning instrumental duo, originally recorded this song in 2001 for their album Once in A Red Moon. Irishman Brian Kennedy contributed vocals. In the United States, the best known version is by Josh Groban, who got a big boost when he sang it on Oprah Winfrey's show in 2004. The Irish boyband Westlife was the 100th artist to record the song, and in 2005, their cover topped the UK chart and won UK Record of the Year. In 2004, Josh Groban performed this song at Super Bowl.

Martin Hurkens always had a dream of being an opera singer, but he did not have the money to stay in music school. Instead, became a baker to make a living and for 32 years he baked, but his singing was mostly reserved for when he was home with his family.

When he lost his job, the Dutch baker’s daughters wanted to help him realize his lifelong dream and entered him in the reality TV talent show “Holland Has Talent” back in 2010. This 58-year-old won legions of fans and the competition!

Martin takes to the streets of Holland like a simple busker would, places down his hat, and sings “You Raise Me Up”. Soon a crowd gathers round to listen to the humble baker with the incredible voice!

Martin must have been discouraged and lost when he lost his job. However, he later found that it was an opportunity for him to start to sing to fulfil his dream. We can see through Martin's life that difficulties that arise in life may not be necessarily bad, but actually be an intended turning point.

The song says that there is “you” that encourages when someone is down. Who that “you” may vary from person to person and depend on the situation. However that "you" could resides within yourself.
