Acclimitisation Day in Namche Bazaar (EBC Trek) | Everest View Hotel and Everest/Sherpa Museum

Day 3 of the Everest Base Camp Trek. Almost everyone takes an acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar at around 3,400m elevation. It might sound boring, but it's a chance to climb up to the Everest View Hotel and get your first good view of Everest and surrounding mountains.

At 3,880m it's a good trip to do on your acclimatisation day. People do actually stay there at $200-$300 a night, which is very expensive for Nepal, though most just stay in the tea houses in Namche Bazar.

It's a reasonably steep climb up from Namche Bazaar to the Everest View Hotel and whilst you may be paying £6 for a small pot of tea, it does offer incredible view of the Everest Region and is definitely worth doing. You don't actually need to go into the hotel. in fact, if you walk to the right of the hotel there is a patch of grass which actually offers a better viewpoint of Everest and you'll probably have it to yourself!

We also visited both Everest museums in Namche Bazaar. One is free and near the Tenzing Norgay statue above the town. The other is about halfway up and whilst you pay to enter, it's only 250 Nepalese rupees (about £1.50). My guide Ghanesh said that he had never actually visited the museum because none of his clients (in 100 trips!) had wanted to go. I genuinely couldn't believe this because whilst it's a fairly basic museum, it does give a good insight into Sherpa life and their contribution to mountaineering in the Everest Region of the Himalayas. It's incredibly easy to do and I would highly recommend that it be part of your itinerary on your acclimatisation day.

Finally, given that it's not too cold and Namche Bazar is the last major town on the EBC Trek, it's your last chance to take a shower. I was actually really surprised by the quality of the shower and for 500 Nepalese Rupees (£3) it's an opportunity that you're going to want to take!
