Anorexia and Diet Culture: Unveiling the Truth

Diet culture and social media promote unrealistic beauty standards that contribute to eating disorders, like anorexia. These messages convince us that we need to be thin in order to be healthy, attractive, and loved. Rebecca Eyre, MA, LMHC, JED Expert, says anorexia is a complex brain disease caused by many factors. She explains how restricting food affects your brain, how to know when you're getting sucked into diet culture, and when to get help. Warning signs of anorexia include obsessively weighing yourself, spending lots of time looking in mirrors and picking at your body, strictly counting calories and macros, and following social media influencers who focus on appearance.

Rebecca also talks through the many ways to fight against det culture and reduce anorexia risk, including tips such as: eat regularly, unfollow accounts that make you feel bad about your body, accept your natural body shape, and celebrate body diversity. Though cultural pressures promote unrealistic body image ideals, anorexia recovery is possible with community support and professional help. Early treatment and connection with others can help people overcome disordered eating, establish a healthy sense of self worth and live fulfilling lives unconstrained by societal expectations.
