Modified All Four Belly Lift
The Modified All Fours Belly Lift is a popular exercise and can be found under many names. Some of you might know this as the "cat" portion of the "Cat Camel" yoga stretch. Others might know this as an All Fours Static Hold, or the Quadruped Position.
The purposes/benefits of the All Four Belly Lift are:
1. To improve activation of deep abdominals
2. To improve flexibility of the back
3. To improve expansion of the rib cage
This is often one of the first exercises given out when starting a Postural Restoration-based program. And while when performed with specific cues in mind, this can be a very useful exercise, when performed without specific attention to the position of the sternum, the effects of the exercise can be reduced and negative secondary effects can be increased.
While this exercise is generally safe for most, increasing activation of superficial abdominals and not achieving a uniform expansion through the rib cage are likely side effects that ultimately limit the effectiveness and benefit of this exercise.
While the amount of perceived stretch is often less when careful attention is paid to the position of the sternum and upper thorax, the benefits in terms of expansion of the rib cage, improved dynamics of the sternum, and increased activation of deeper abdominals are most likely to be increased.
