Herbert Whittaker Part Two
Herbert Whittaker (1910-2006) was born in Montreal and studied theatrical design at the Ecole des beaux-arts de Montréal. While remaining active in Montreal as a designer, actor and director, from 1935 to 1949 he reviewed theatre, dance and film for the Montreal Gazette. In 1949 he moved to Toronto to become the theatre critic for the Globe and Mail, a post he held until retiring in 1975. He also continued to contribute to theatre practice in Ontario, designing a famous Inuit-inspired King Lear for the Canadian Players, and directing plays for Hart House Theatre, Jupiter Theatre, and the Crest Theatre.
