Joy Coghill Part One

Joy Coghill (1926-2017) was born in Saskatchewan, lived in Scotland for much of her childhood, and was evacuated to Vancouver in 1940. Mentored by Dorothy Somerset at the University of British Columbia, Joy went on to study at Goodman Theatre in Chicago. In the 1950s she co-founded Holiday Theatre in Vancouver, Canada’s first professional theatre for children, and acted and directed for Everyman Theatre under Sydney Risk. In 1967 she became the first female Artistic Director of the Vancouver Playhouse, and one of the first in Canada. See website “Joy (Un)Sorted,” www.joycoghill.com.
