Donald Davis
Donald Davis (1928-98) was born in Newmarket ON, and first appeared at Hart House Theatre in 1947. The following year, with his brother Murray Davis and sister Barbara Chilcott, he founded the Straw Hat Players, a summer stock company in Ontario’s Muskoka region. In 1953 the Davises founded the Crest Theatre in Toronto, an important precursor of the Canadian regional theatres. Donald Davis performed at the Stratford Festival for five seasons, and in the US was considered a major interpreter of the plays of Samuel Beckett, winning an Obie award for the premiere production of Krapp’s Last Tape.
