Greetings. I'm Tim of Govberg and welcome to the world of IWC. Today, I'll be your guide to the IWC pilot's watch chronograph, reference 3777-09. It's important to note that the 43 millimeter stainless steel pilot's watch chronograph features the same instrument aesthetic as the big pilots in the mark series while occupying a size between the 46 millimeter big pilot and the more discreet and traditional 40 millimeter mark 18. The watch features a modern chronograph complication with the convenience of a day and a date aperture set for perhaps the most versatile combination of complications available in automatic winding time piece.
Starting from the outside and working our way in, you can see the traditional and easily adjustable pin buckle, beautifully satin and polished for contrasting metal work. It also features engraved IWC marquee. The Santoni leather strap, provided by the great Italian leather house, is hand made and custom cut for IWC, featuring the firm's signature signal orange on the bottom, and a rich black calves skin with monotone stitch on the top. The traditional material for aviator's time pieces, the calves skin is exceptionally supple and beautifully rendered. It works in concert with a very traditional case shape, featuring smooth, blended lugs tapered into the case flanks, and subtle use of polish. For instance, the tapered bevel along the flanks of the lugs, as well as the flanking band of the bezel.
The watch is essentially all dial with the bezel paired down to emphasize the instrument style calibrations of the dial and expand it as widely as possible across the available 43 millimeter real estate of the watch. Now, it's important to note that the chronograph features triple registers, so chronograph hour, minutes, and seconds are registered, with seconds at center, minutes at twelve o'clock, and chronograph hours one through twelve listed at six o'clock. A constant seconds indicator allows tracking of the time to the second, even when the chronograph function is not running. The chronograph function is started and stopped with the pusher at two o'clock, reset with the pusher at four o'clock.
The caliber within endows the watch with these multifarious complications, is an IWC caliber 79320, automatic with 25 jewels. It features a 44 hour power reserve, hacking seconds such that when you pull the crown to extremely, you just stop the balance, permitting precise synchronization to a known accurate reference time. Note the halt of the seconds indicator at nine o'clock. The watch also features a convenience double quick set for the day and the date, such that it can be easily cycled should the watch ever encounter an irregular length month or run down. Moreover, the watch has several aviation specific functions.
Beneath the case back, featuring the image of a Junkers Ju 52, as owned and operated by IWC, there is a soft iron inner core that encapsulates the movement and protects it from strong magnetic flux densities. The screwed in case back, in conjunction with the screw down crown, endows the watch with six ATM or 60 meter water resistance, such that the watch can be used, for instance, per IWC for snorkeling, shallow diving, and swimming. However, the watch should never be used as such while still mounted on the leather strap. Simply fit a textile, or bracelet before taking the plunge.
A specific aviation refinement unique to the IWC's pilot's watches is the blow out protection for explosive decompression conditions in an aviation environment. Should an aircraft at altitude rapidly lose all pressurization of the cockpit, the crown, the crystal, and the case back have been secured such that they will not eject, nor blow out their seals in an explosive decompression condition. You can see this IWC automatic winding pilot's watch with chronograph, day, and date along with the entire IWC family of model lines on our website, govbergwatches.com.
