Maurice Podbrey
Maurice Podbrey (b. 1934) was born in South Africa and educated there and in London, England. After a brief career as a schoolteacher, in 1959 he began acting with the Dundee Repertory Theatre and in 1964 became artistic director of the Chester Playhouse. He came to Montreal in 1966 as assistant director of the English section of the National Theatre School. In 1969 he took over as Artistic Director of Montreal’s Instant Theatre which was soon reorganized into the Centaur Theatre, now Quebec’s largest English-language theatre company. He remained in that position until retiring in 1997.
