Greetings, I'll be your guide to the proper usage and care of your IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII. It's important to note that although this is an automatic time piece, nevertheless, it can be manually wound should it run down. Simply turn the crown counterclockwise until it pops into its neutral position, and then turn clockwise a minimum of 20 times, until you see the center seconds hand begin to advance.

At this point the watch can be worn on the wrist and the natural course of kinetic energy on the wrist will allow the automatic rotor to wind the timepiece. However, should you wish to wind the watch up to it's complete 42-hour-rated autonomy, simply continue turning the crown. You cannot accidentally over wind this automatic timepiece as the bridle-style mainspring will simply slip and relieve any excess strain.

When you're satisfied that the watch has been full wound, two additional refinements allow precise setting of the calendar and the time. Note the advance of the seconds hand. As it approaches the index, pull the crown to its outermost position. Now you've hacked the balance, stopped the seconds, and the watch can be precisely synchronized to a known accurate reference time, such as an atomic or radio clock.

When you push the crown back in, the balance resumes it's beat. There is an intermediate position between hacking seconds and winding that can be used to rapidly correct the date indicator at 3:00. It's important to note that the quick-set date function should never be engaged between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., as this is the period during which the watch's automatic date jumper is engaged. Attempting to use the quick-set during this period can damage the movement.

Once the watch has been set, apply pressure and wind the crown in a clockwise direction until it is once again flush and tight against the flanks of the case. At this point, the watch is prepared for submergence to its rated depth of 60 meters. 6hm water resistance per IWC, is sufficient for bathing, swimming, and shallow water snorkeling.

It's important to note that for the sake of sizing, such as when placing the watch over a dive suit or during periods of activity, such as swimming, or outdoor lifestyle engagement, depressing the plunger on the clasp allows micro metric sizing of the bracelet. It's also important to note when approaching aquatic use, that not only should the crown always be threaded in when the watch is submerged or wet, but its functions should never be used. That is, no winding, no setting should ever be engaged when there is water on the watch, as this can bypass the seals and introduce water to the interior of the movement. Moreover, it's important to note that water-resistance is not a static feature of a timepiece. Lubricants dry, seals age and IWC recommends strongly so that the watch be water tested at an authorized dealer at least once per year to ensure factory-rated hermiticity.

Magnetism is also an important concern with respect to the performance of your watch. Although this aviation-style timepiece features a soft iron inner cage to protect against strong magnetic flux densities, nevertheless the watch should be kept clear of exceptionally powerful speakers and sub-woofers, refrigerator doors and MRI equipment. If you suspect, due to erratic running, that your watch may have been magnetized, take it to an authorize dealer where specialized equipment is available to demagnetize and restore the performance of your watch.

IWC also recommends with respect to mechanical service, that the timepiece be given a complete overhaul every two to five years. It's critical that this be performed only with an authorized independent dealer or a factory boutique store, as these agencies alone have the trained personnel, specialized parts and specialized equipment to properly service your timepiece and protect its investment value and functional integrity. Moreover, only these agencies are authorized to back the work performed and the parts provided with a factory warranty from IWC.
