Everything a Marine Must Know to Throw a Grenade

When you’re training with live grenades, the smallest mistake can be deadly. Modern grenades have an injury radius of up to 50 feet, and a fatality radius of around 15 feet, which is why before even being allowed to graduate boot camp, all Marines must train to safely throw grenades even under high pressure like in war zones.

First, they go through the fundamentals to make sure they are proficient at throwing grenades, such as standard combat tosses, standing to prone and kneeling to prone tosses.

After that, trainees move on to throwing M-69 practice grenades, which are painted blue to indicate that they aren’t the real thing. They’re similar to live grenades in feel and fuse length, but will only emit smoke and a popping noise when they detonate.

Finally, Marines throw live M-67 fragmentation grenades to put everything they’ve learned to the test. These are the real thing, and even the smallest mistake can put the thrower or their fellow Marines in danger. To pass training, they have to throw at least two grenades about 95 feet away and get to a covered position before the detonation.
