Why 30,000 NATO Forces Go to Norway Every 2 Years

Can you imagine fighting in the subzero temperatures of the arctic? That situation is a reality for soldiers participating in Exercise Cold Response, and here’s why they do it.

NATO countries prepare to operate in cold, austere environments through an extensive training exercise known as Cold Response. Every two years, dozens of countries get together and send troops, ships, planes, and more to participate. This month-long exercise takes place in the rugged mountains, frozen tundra, and chilling fjords of Norway’s arctic landscape.

The exercise is vital to ensuring military readiness since soldiers and equipment all perform quite differently in extreme cold. By practicing these skills now, NATO forces can identify what is working and what areas, tactics, or equipment need improvement. And especially with today's geopolitical environment, this past year's exercise was one of the largest, comprising over 30,000 personnel from 27 different countries.
