How Planes Emergency Land on Aircraft Carriers

Landing on a flight deck is one of the most difficult things a navy pilot will ever have to do – and if the landing gear isn’t working or the tailhook is damaged it gets a whole lot harder.
For emergency landings, every U.S. aircraft carrier has a barricade webbing system to stop an incoming aircraft when a normal landing is not an option. Barricades are rarely used but flight deck crews regularly train how to set up a barricade in less than 3 minutes after notification of an emergency.
The barricade engages the wings of the landing aircraft and makes the aircraft stop in just 2 seconds with its powerful vertical straps that are roughly 20 feet high.
This failsafe comes at a huge cost though. The multiple engagement straps severely damage the airframe of pricey naval aircraft like the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jet that can cost up to $100 million, so the barricade system is used only as a last resort.
