Navy SEAL Training Phase 2
Phase Two of BUD/S puts the frog in frogmen, but how extreme does BUD/S take its underwater training?
Beginning in phase one, candidates learned how to drown-proof themselves, meaning that they could tread water with their hands and feet bound for fifteen to thirty minutes at a time. Now, candidates must learn how to break free and swim laps for hundreds of meters individually and as a group.
Their intense training also carries over outside the pool and into the ocean surf. Candidates must successfully complete timed swims with both open and closed-circuit SCUBA diving. They also have to conduct a deep water, 120-foot dive off Point Loma with a combat load.
The trainees then get back in the pool to practice the drown-proofing techniques they learned earlier with no gear. Now, the instructors purposefully harass them by disconnecting regulator hoses and turning off oxygen to induce fear and stress in the men.
