Army Gas Chamber Training

One of the hardest and most uncomfortable parts of Army basic training is the so-called Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical or NBC training, which teaches recruits to effectively use protective equipment such as M50 gas masks.

The most notorious part of this is gas chamber training. Recruits file into the gas chamber, which is filled with CS, better known as tear gas– a highly concentrated irritant. Recruits are asked to lift their gas masks, recite information and perform some physical exercises before reattaching and clearing the masks. To make sure recruits inhale the tear gas, drill sergeants have them remove their masks again and exit the chamber without closing their eyes.

This training ensures that Army soldiers are prepared to handle themselves in the event of a chemical or biological weapons attack, and can quickly put on and clear their gas masks before engaging or helping others. For many recruits, NBC training is the most daunting part of Basic due to its high stress and extreme discomfort.
