I fell into the trap of asking Alex Honnold a question that I already knew the answer to.

How did you endure? What motivated you? How did you succeed?

It's tempting to seek a 'magic bullet' – that singular piece of wisdom that unlocks the motivation that we need to tackle a big challenge.

As Alex reminded me, the truth is, you just need to start:

“I'm sure people ask you the same thing, like ‘what did you learn being alone in a tent for so long?’ Did you learn anything other than the fact that if you want to do something hard, you just set out and start doing it?”

The crux of any accomplishment lies in how well you shift from contemplation to action (and back again)

With any seemingly insurmountable challenge, you just chip away, step-by-step, until it’s done.
