Polly Brown ~ Up In A Puff Of Smoke 1974 Disco Purrfection Version

When was the last time you thought of this one?

In the late sixties and early 70's bubblegum rock was in full bloom. One of those producers, John MacLeod, helped the Foundations (Build Me Up Buttercup) and The Flying Machine (Smile A Little Smile For Me) both big hits in the genre.

He put together a studio group with 2 female leads Maggie Farren and Polly Brown with four males in the chorus and dubbed them Pickettywitch, after a local Cornish village. The group went nowhere and it dissolved.

Polly decided to sing blue eyed soul and it was a cagey move to give it that bubblegum gloss. "Up In A Puff Of Smoke" came on sounding like a Motown thunderstorm and then Polly comes in with her best Diana Ross impression and creates a one hit wonder in the US where it peaked at #16, but tanked in the singers home country in the UK.

She then left recording to attend to other matters and declined to join a re-formed Pickettywitch.
