Irene Cara ~ The Dream (Hold On To Your Dream) 1983 Disco Purrfection Version
Irene Cara Escalera is her full name and she was born March 18, 1959 in the Bronx, New York City one of five children of Puerto Rican, Black and Cuban descent. Born into a musical family, Dad played saxophone she learned to play piano on her own. At 5 she was taking dance lessons that led her directly to singing and dancing on Spanish language television. Johnny Carson saw her and invited her to join him on his wildly popular talk show.
Next she joined the cast of The Electric Company then recorded a spanish language album for the Latin market and an English Christmas album. She was invited to join the concert tribute to Duke Ellington and performed alongside Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder and Sammy Davis Jr and then attended the Professional Children's School in Manhattan.
Next was Broadway and off Broadway productions she also joined the cast of the Love Of Live soap opera as the original Daisy Allen. She also appeared in Roots:The Next Generation and Guyana Tragedy The Story Of Jim Jones.
All of this set her up for the star making turn in "Fame" as Coco Hernandez singing the title tune and several other songs for the soundtrack. The role was specifically re-written for her and resulted in a multi platinum chart topping album, Fame won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
Going back to Broadway as Dorothy in "The Wiz" and then her award winning performance as Myrlie Evers-Williams for the Medgar Evers story.
She was selected as the artist to perform Flashdance "What A Feeling" produced by Giorgio Moroder, but was not willing to do that since she was being compared to Donna Summer. She relented and Keith Forsey picked her up on to go to the studio to record it and wrote the lyrics on the way there.
