How goal setting can become a trap

I'm only bringing up this topic because I speak from experience!

I've found that when I set long-term fitness goals, it's best for me to only look at them once or twice per year. They help to ensure that I'm heading in the right direction, but other than that, they don't have a place in my daily routine.

The majority of my energy has to be devoted to accomplishing the small day-to-day tasks that are necessary for my continual improvement. After a while, I might even forget what my long-term goals were! When I finally go back and look back and look at what I had written down, I realize that they don't reflect my priorities anymore!

Have you ever felt like you progress has stagnated because you were too focused on some far-off goal? Or do you find that future-thinking actually helps you? Let me know in the comments!
